It's All About Me! with Doc List

Details

We're excited to announce our next meetup with Doc List and his talk all about Self Care. Doc List has been working in software development and IT for several decades, and has filled almost every role in a software organization at one time or another.

ABOUT THIS SESSION:

You live in a world with people. Lots of people. Each of them behaves in various ways, and those behaviors affect you. You feel angry or hurt or joyful or frustrated. Sometimes you behave in ways that affect other people. In each case you have a choice - yes a choice - about how you will feel and behave.

In this session you learn some techniques for understanding, communicating, and feeling more comfortable and at ease in situations that might be stressful.

Doc combines his education (psychology), personal experience (team member, manager, executive, personal and business coach, agile coach), tools and techniques from "Crucial Conversations", and specific lessons from "The Anatomy of Peace" by The Arbinger Institute.

He has led variations of this session a number of times and continues to refine it. It's a fun session that helps participants begin to understand their own behaviors and to own their own feelings.

PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE:

N/A

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  • Explain specific strategies for dealing with stressful situations
  • Demonstrate techniques for effective communication in stressful situations
  • Explain the Collusion Diagram

ABOUT DOC LIST

Doc List has been working in software development and IT for several decades, and has filled almost every role in a software organization at one time or another. Doc was using practices that became a part of Scrum and Agile before either was defined, since they just made sense. He has been active as a coach, trainer, manager, presenter, and facilitator for years, and incorporates practices from Scrum and XP in almost everything he does. As a member of the staff at Dovetail Software, Doc was responsible for implementing Agile practices, leading/guiding the team in their implementation, and serving variously as Scrum Master, Agile Coach, and manager. During Doc's first year at ThoughtWorks, Doc served as an Agile Coach and Trainer, supporting organizations in adopting Scrum and Agile. In his latter two years at ThoughtWorks, Doc was responsible for building the training group at ThoughtWorks Studios, developing much of the training material, and delivering training to organizations across the US and in the UK and Australia. Subsequently, Doc has continued to work in the consulting field as an Agile Coach, Trainer, leader, consultant, and facilitator, with a continuing focus on Agile/Scrum/Lean. Doc has presented at multiple conferences and events inside and outside the US, include every Agile20xx since 2008, many of the Better Software/Agile Development Conferences, and a variety of others.
