Dollmaking Workshop: Spirit in All Things
Details
This workshop is deeply inspired by my Chinese cultural background. Within the ancient Chinese culture, there is a rich spiritual and expansive world in which all things are believed to carry spirit, or ling (灵). There are many different kinds of spiritual beings, such as jing (精), guai (怪), gui (鬼), xian (仙), yao (妖), and shen (神).
In Chinese folk belief and storytelling, animals, plants, landscapes, and objects all have spirits, consciousness, or transformative power. Some may take on human-like form, cross between realms, or act as protectors, guides, tricksters, or companions. Examples include menshen (门神, door guardian), shanshen (山神, mountain deity), and huxian (狐仙, fox spirit).
I have long been inspired and guided by this animist worldview, and it has brought a deep sense of abundance, wonder, and connection in my life. In this workshop, I invite you to create your own doll inspired by a spirit that truly speaks to your heart. Your doll can become a companion, a guide, a guardian, or a reflection of something meaningful within your inner world.
