LGBTQ life existed in NYC long before the Stonewall riots. This tour seeks to explore queer life in the 70 years before the birth of the modern gay rights movement. On it you will learn about semi-secretive societies, wild 19th Century bars and their fairies, local friendly hangouts and safe spaces, the beginning of Off-Off-Broadway Theatre, some overlooked characters in NYC queer history, and an important protest at another Village bar.
