West Coast Syrah (and Blends)!
Details
The past few years I've really gotten into WA State wines. I love the Cabs, but they also make some great Syrahs, most of which don't break the bank. For this dinner we're going to taste a sampling of Syrahs and Syrah based blends from WA State, Oregon and Napa Valley. Plus a White Aligote from Burgundy. We will have 1 white wine and 4 reds in this 8 person event.
We will be dining at Bobby Van's on Park. Located on the corner of Park Avenue and 46th Street.
Here is a link to their menu...

Just a reminder of our usual rules:
** The cost of this event is $42 and is for the cost of the wines only.
NOTE: Meetup has started charging a "Partner Fee" that is above and in addition to the listed price of the event. It is annoying and confusing, but there is nothing I can do about it. It comes to approximately $2.75 more for each RSVP. You will see this charge when you complete your rsvp and pay for the event. Sorry!
You will also have to pay the cost of your food (plus 32% for tax and tip). Please order at least two courses (i.e. a main dish and either appetizer or dessert) for your dinner. There are very few restaurants that allow us to bring our own wine for a Zero corkage fee. We must be good guests to encourage the restaurant to continue to be generous to us.
Please read and understand the group's cancellation policy. If you take spot, then cancel, and no one else takes the spot, you will not receive a refund or credit. No refunds or credits will be given for no-shows or late cancellations (unless someone else takes your spot). All cancellations are subject to a $2 service fee.
Please use public transportation - NO DRINKING AND DRIVING!
The Wines (notes will be distributed at the dinner):
2019 Domaine Denis Bachelet Bourgogne-Aligoté ($42) – CT 91.3, from the importer, “This wine has been a stalwart favorite of mine and many other savvy white Burgundy drinkers over the years. It is a fantastic example of Aligoté at its best, full of upper register white floral intensity, mouthwatering acidity/minerality, and excellent depth. Salty citrus sensations will find my wife calling this "Margarita wine"....
2013 Gramercy Cellars Syrah Columbia Valley ($27) – CT 91.4, JD 94 points, “Readers looking for a killer Syrah to purchase to see what Washington is all about couldn't do any better than a bottle of the 2013 Columbia Valley Syrah from Gramercy. Possessing lots of gamy, olive, peppery, lavender and salted meats, with a core of ripe plum and darker fruits, this beauty is full-bodied, supple, polished and utterly seamless, with no hard edges and a clean, focused finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. Buy this beauty by the case and drink it over the coming decade.”
2018 Long Shadows Wineries Syrah Sequel ($60) – CT 92.1, JD 97 points “Loads of black fruits, smoked game, liquid violets, and cracked pepper notes emerge from the 2018 Syrah Sequel, which has gorgeous Syrah wildness and gaminess, full-bodied richness, a pure, elegant, seamless texture, ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. Count me impressed. You could safely put this up with the best Syrah coming out of Washington and California.”
2020 Holocene Syrah River Rock Vineyard ($93) – from Oregon. No CT reviews, JD (92-94) points “The 2020 Syrah River Rock Vineyard is incredibly elegant, silky, and just straight-up gorgeous on all accounts. Offering lots of black raspberry fruits, spring flowers, peppery herbs, and spice-driven aromatics, it's medium to full-bodied, pure, and balanced on the palate, with a great finish. This is another remarkable Syrah from Todd with tons to love.” This is Holocene's first Syrah (all others have been Pinot Noir and Chardonnay).
2012 Shafer Relentless ($85) – From Napa Valley, CA. CT 93.3, WA (94-97) points, from a 2014 barrel sample, “The 2012 Syrah Relentless, which has not yet been bottled, is a blend of 89% Syrah and 11% Petite Sirah. In keeping with this amazing year, it’s full-bodied, juicy, succulent, flamboyant, with blueberry and blackberry fruit galore, lots of glycerin and a massive mouthfeel, but no heaviness or astringency characterize this stunning wine. This should turn out to be a great, great Rhône Ranger when released in a year or so.”
