Memorial Day Burgundy!

Details

I've been accumulating off the beaten track Burgundies from an importer in Delaware and it's time to drink some of them. So for this dinner, I'll put together a selection of these wines.
We will be dining at Nice Matin, a place we have been to often and always enjoyed. For this 8 person dinner there will be 1 white wine and 4 red wines, all from Burgundy.

Here is a link to their menu:
Nice Matin Dinner Menu

Nice Matin is located at 201 W. 79th Street, the corner of Amsterdam Ave.

** The cost of this event is $48 and is for the cost of the wines.

NOTE: Meetup has started charging a "Partner Fee" that is above and in addition to the listed price of the event. It is annoying and confusing, but there is nothing I can do about it. It comes to approximately $4 more for each RSVP. You will see this charge when you complete your rsvp and pay for the event. MEETUP+ members are exempt from this charge.

Just a reminder of our usual rules:

You will also have to pay the cost of your food (plus 33% for tax and tip). You will be expected to order at least 2 dishes (an appetizer and a main, or main and dessert) to help support the restaurant.

Please read and understand the group's cancellation policy. If you take spot, then cancel, and no one else takes the spot, you will not receive a refund or credit. No refunds or credits will be given for no-shows or late cancellations (unless someone else takes your spot). All cancellations are subject to a $5 service fee.

The Wines (notes will be distributed at the dinner):
2022 Thierry Violot-Guillemard Pinot Beurot Bourgogne Blanc ($33) - Instead of a Chardonnay or even an Aligote, let's go with Pinot Beurot, From the importer, "This is a great little wine that I have pushed hard to get every year, but have only been able to include a few times. The generosity of 2022 has afforded us the chance to get some of this everyday house wine dream, the 100% Pinot blanc aka Pinot Beurrot. In textural appeal and generosity, finishing dry, vertical, and perfumey, this is delightful.

"One plot dates from 1982, supplemented by some from 2017. Very floral and not too ripe, the first picked so it still has an excellent zesty quality. I like this balance and it has excellent energy behind. A good way to make it. Drink from 2024-2026. Tasted: October 2023." 88 Jasper Morris "Four Star" wine

2022 Joannès Violot-Guillemard Bourgogne Côte d'Or Les Maison Dieu ($43) - CT 92.3, Jasper Morris 88 points, "Mid crimson, darker than the Hautes Côtes de Beaune. There is much more weight to this in the mouth, thanks to older vines, giving darker raspberry fruit. Vinified with about half whole bunch, this has energy as well as the natural weight of the Maison Dieu site. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted: October 2023." From the importer, "This is the house best Bourgogne level wine, and a calling card of the estate, of sorts. This is a very unique and special parcel, once featured on the Santiago de Compostela hermitage route, and once classified as a villages level parcel. This has all of the essential Pommard fruit groups well represented: moderately dark red fruits, medium plus concentration, light but buried tannic grip under a wealth of delicous raspberry fruit, with an exceptional level of dry extract/mineral mass for a Bourgogne level wine. As it always does, this punches well above its price point, and is an archetypal example of a Bourgogne that delivers quintessential single village/single parcel character at a pittance of a price."

2017 Domaine Denis Bachelet Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes ($124) -CT 91.7 -From vines averaging between 60 and 70 years of age located in Les Champs Perriers, En Derée, Sylvie, Les Jeunes Rois, La Justice, La Burie and La Platière). Matured in around 50% new oak, the 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes has (another) gorgeous and pure bouquet with small dark cherries, raspberry preserve and subtle violet notes. The new oak is seamlessly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple red and black fruit, lightly spiced with a slightly confit-like finish. Divine." 90-92 Neil Martin

2021 Domaine François Buffet Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes ($85) - More deeply pitched and restrained aromas include those of plum, violet, clove and anise. The more robust, muscular and denser medium-bodied flavors deliver excellent persistence on the more structured and powerful finish. As is virtually always the case with Clos des Chênes, this is going to need at least a few years of patience and should be capable of rewarding a decade plus. (91-93)/2031+" Allen Meadows

"Made from 50 and 80 year old vines. Mid crimson, with not so much showing on the nose at first. The class shows more on the palate, raspberry leading the cherry notes, a little firmer at the finish, slightly darker fruit, with good persistence. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted: October 2022" 90-93 Jasper Morris

2022 Bruno Lorenzon Mercurey Les Vignes d'Orge ($58) - From Mercurey and the village dates from pre-historic times and is the most widely recognized and important wine village of the Côte Chalonnaise, producing more wines than all other village appellations combined. From the importer, "Now that I have tasted it, I can attest to the fact that the 2022 is a knockout, as Bruno told me in no uncertain terms that it is all that he would hope the wine could be. He is not a braggart nor glib with superlatives....I trusted him wholeheartedly, and now see what he means...

"Delicious fruit flavours. Plenty of ripe cherry. Flesh overlaying a mineral base. 50% whole bunch and just 15% new oak." Jeremy Holmes
