Short Notice Cabernet Night @ Bobby Van's

Details

Once again, on the spur of the moment, I decided to host a small group at Bobby Van's. I have room in my wine bag for 3 bottles, so for this dinner, 1 white, 2 reds for 5 people at perennial group favorite Bobby Van's on Park.

Bobby Van's on Park is located on the corner of Park Avenue and 46th Street. The entrance is in the East side walkway that connects 45th and 46th Streets.

Here is a link to their menu...

Just a reminder of our usual rules:

** The cost of this event is $36 and is for the cost of the wines only.

NOTE: Meetup has started charging a "Partner Fee" that is above and in addition to the listed price of the event. It comes to approximately $4 more for each RSVP. You will see this charge when you complete your rsvp and pay for the event. Sorry! Meetup+ members are exempt from this charge.

You will also have to pay the cost of your food (plus 33% for tax and tip). Please order at least two courses (i.e. a main dish and either appetizer or dessert) for your dinner. There are very few restaurants that allow us to bring our own wine for a Zero corkage fee. We must be good guests to encourage the restaurant to continue to be generous to us.

Please read and understand the group's cancellation policy. If you take spot, then cancel, and no one else takes the spot, you will not receive a refund or credit. No refunds or credits will be given for no-shows or late cancellations (unless someone else takes your spot). All cancellations are subject to a $5 service fee.

Please use public transportation - NO DRINKING AND DRIVING!

The Wines (notes will be distributed at the dinner):
NOTE: REGARDING THE REDS - I think JD overrated the Lewelling and underrated the Soos Creek. Personally, I think they are both in the 93/94 point range.

2022 Domaine Dujardin Bouzeron La Tournelle ($30) – Aligote!! From the importer **“**The village of Bouzeron is best known as the limestone rich epicenter of some of the noblest Aligoté in Burgundy. I was excited to see this offered, as I have yet to ever offer a Bouzeron wine. From a sloped parcel defined by its large amount of active limestone, this performs as the tonic, salty, and stony counterpoint to the Chasne, the yin-yang thing that I was referring to. Aromatically, you can smell the active limestone a-comin', which is only confirmed in the mouth. Its sense of precision is great, wonderfully harmonized between flesh and bone to a silky degree.”
2015 Lewelling Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Wight ($80) – CT 93, JD 98 points, “The flagship cuvee from this estate is the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Wight Vineyard and it’s always a cellar selection of top lots from the estate vintage. This is an undeniably majestic, ethereal effort from the Wight Family. Huge amounts of blue fruits, spring flowers, sandalwood, lavender, and potpourri notes all literally soar from the glass and this beauty has just about everything you could want in a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. With a full-bodied, deep, concentrated style, incredible complexity, hints of background oak, and layers of sweet tannin, give bottle 2-3 years of bottle age and drink over the following 2-3 decades. Bravo! I loved both the 2014s and 2015s from Lewelling, but have to give the nod to the 2015s, which have that extra dimension.”
2014 Soos Creek Champoux Vineyard ($40) – CT 92.3, JD 90 points, “The 2014 Champoux Vineyard is rock-solid. Made from 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Cabernet Franc, it has lots of incense, dried violets and black and blue fruits, medium to full-bodied richness, and a layered, nicely textured style. (drink 2017-2027)”
From Full Pull Retailer: For almost as long as Full Pull has been writing about wine, we’ve considered Soos Creek to be responsible for some of the best values coming out of Washington. Soos Creek is a holistic representation of our state’s burgeoning wine scene. The man in charge, Dave Larsen, is one of the great success stories of the Boeing Winemaking Club. He began making wine in 1987 and quickly moved from amateur to commercial winemaking in 1989. He kept both gigs (Boeing and Soos Creek) until 2004, when he retired from Boeing to pursue winemaking full time. Despite 30 years in the business, Soos Creek is still very much a boutique winery, with thoughtful, limited production (still under 2,000 cases) that always leads to high demand. Much of Soos Creek’s success comes from its honest and passionate approach to fruit. From the sourcing to winemaking, presenting and showcasing beautiful fruit has always been Dave’s focus. David Larsen and Champoux have a long, rich history together. Dave’s first commercial wine in 1989 was made from Mercer Ranch fruit. Mercer Ranch was eventually sold and renamed Champoux Vineyard and is considered by many the greatest site for Cabernet Sauvignon in the state. 2014 marks Dave’s 26th vintage working with this site.

2015 Long Shadows Wineries Cabernet Sauvignon Feather ($55) – JD 95 points, “The 2015 Feather Vintage Select is made by Randy Dunn and is all Cabernet Sauvignon aged in new barrels. This rocking effort has tons of dark, cassis and currant styled fruits interwoven with notes of chocolate, graphite, and lead pencil-like aromas and flavors. Rich, full-bodied, and concentrated on the palate, it stays beautifully balanced, has ripe tannins, and is a straight-up gorgeous Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink it any time over the coming two decades. (Drink between 2020-2040)”
