Rising Terroirs: A White Burgundy Discovery Tasting

Details

Thanks to Stephen for introducing me to this great Italian restaurant. The food is excellent, and the atmosphere is perfect for wine and conversation. It's located on the corner of E. 78th Street and York Avenue. Here's the link to their menu:

Altamirano's Menu

For this 6-person tasting, we’ll begin with a Champagne, then move on to three Burgundy whites—perfect for unwinding after work and staying refreshed in the summer heat.

Just a reminder of our usual rules:

** The cost of this event is $43 and is for the cost of the wines and corkage only.

NOTE: Meetup has started charging a "Partner Fee" that is above and in addition to the listed price of the event. It comes to approximately $4 more for each RSVP. You will see this charge when you complete your rsvp and pay for the event. Sorry! Meetup+ members are exempt from this charge.

Please note that you'll be responsible for the cost of your own food, plus an additional 33% to cover tax and tip. We kindly ask that you order at least two courses—such as a main dish and either an appetizer or dessert—for dinner. Restaurants that allow us to bring our own wine for a reasonable corkage fee are rare, so it's important that we show our appreciation by being gracious guests. This helps ensure we’re welcomed back in the future.

Please read and understand the group's cancellation policy. If you take spot, then cancel, and no one else takes the spot, you will not receive a refund or credit. No refunds or credits will be given for no-shows or late cancellations (unless someone else takes your spot). All cancellations are subject to a $6 service fee.

Please use public transportation - NO DRINKING AND DRIVING!

The Wines:

Bereche et Fils Brut Reserve Champagne , Vinous 91, The NV Brut Réserve (base 2021/magnum) is a very pretty, open-knit wine. This edition, based on 2021, is on the lighter side, which is to be expected. At the same time, it offers lovely forward fruit along with the textural silkiness of a Champagne aged on cork. Dried apricot, white flowers, hazelnut, spice and light tropical overtones build into the creamy, understated finish.

2023 Raphaelle Guyot 'L'Aurore', Bourgogne Cotes d’Auxerre, Coming from vines in the Bourgogne Cote D'Auxerre appelation, this Chardonnay is at once ripe, textured and mouthfilling, and also has a beautiful core of acidity to keep things balanced and playful. Ripe stonefruit and citrus dominate the nose and palate. As will all of the Negoce wines, Raphäelle maintains her relationships with her growers and helps out in the vines, keeping her connected to the fruit.
The grapes come from a vineyard selection on a clay-limestone plot. The vines have been planted in 2015 and are in organic farming since 2019.
Handpicked harvest at optimal ripeness in cases of 20kg. Direct press, aged partly in oak barels and partly in stainless tank.
Bourgogne Cotes d’Auxerre
In the far north of Burgundy lies the city of Auxerre. In the surrounding environs are seven communes which produce wines under the Cote d’Auxerre title. This region is some 80 miles from the ‘capital’ of Burgundy, the city of Beaune, and is nearest to the region of Chablis. Here the soils are rich in limestone, and the white wines in particular have the continental climate to thank for their steely, fresh personality.

2021 Vincent Dancer Bourgogne Blanc, WA 89 , Aromas of pear, mint and white flowers introduce the 2021 Bourgogne Blanc, a medium-bodied, fleshy, ample wine that's impressively rich and textural for the vintage, with a lively spine of acidity and a saline finish.
About the Producer
Vincent Dancer cultivates 6 hectares of land across Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, Meursault, Pommard and Beaune, family vines that he took up in 1996 after his oenology training. He got things going on his own at the family property, where he went on to build a winery in 1997. Since 2012, his vines have had organic certification. Vincent Dancer has shown himself to be talented and creative in his work, particularly succeeding in the maturation of his cuvées. His wines are remarkable, characterised by their purity and finesse.

2020 Domaine Saumaize-Michelin Pouilly-Fuissé La Maréchaude 1er Cru, Vinous 95, The 2020 Pouilly-Fuissé La Maréchaude 1er Cru comes from two parcels, around half a hectare together, one particularly steep, which makes it hard to farm and so everything has to be done manually, backpacks to spray and so on. A little deeper in colour than other cuvées, this has a more concentrated, almost petrolly bouquet that manages to maintain impressive delineation and focus. The palate is beautifully balanced, very complex, a killer spine of acidity with outstanding tension on the finish. Very composed, I had to have a sneaky sip of this nectar.
