Bright Whites & Silky Reds - Mosel + Burgundy Tasting

Details

We're returning to one of my favorite spots—Noreetuh—for this tasting. Located at 128 First Avenue in the East Village, Noreetuh is a modern Hawaiian restaurant whose menu pairs beautifully with Burgundy wines.
Noreetuh Menu

For this 6-person tasting, we’ll begin with two expressive Rieslings, then journey into Burgundy with wines from Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges.

Just a reminder of our usual rules:

** The cost of this event is $65 and is for the cost of the wines and corkage only.

NOTE: Meetup has started charging a "Partner Fee" that is above and in addition to the listed price of the event. It comes to approximately $4 more for each RSVP. You will see this charge when you complete your rsvp and pay for the event. Sorry! Meetup+ members are exempt from this charge.

Please note that you'll be responsible for the cost of your own food, plus an additional 33% to cover tax and tip. We kindly ask that you order at least two courses—such as a main dish and either an appetizer or dessert—for dinner. Restaurants that allow us to bring our own wine for a reasonable corkage fee are rare, so it's important that we show our appreciation by being gracious guests. This helps ensure we’re welcomed back in the future.

Please read and understand the group's cancellation policy. If you take spot, then cancel, and no one else takes the spot, you will not receive a refund or credit. No refunds or credits will be given for no-shows or late cancellations (unless someone else takes your spot). All cancellations are subject to a $6 service fee.

Please use public transportation - NO DRINKING AND DRIVING!

The Wines:

2022 Stein Palmberg Riesling Kabinett trocken Alte Reben, CT 94 (Don Johnson), Wine is pale straw in color. On the nose wine is laser sharp showing saline, mineral, citrus, unripe tropical fruit, petrol, fine herbs. On the palate wine has high acid, medium body, long finish. Wine is mineral and saline forward. The palate also shows candied lemon, unripe pineapple, grapefruit, some herbal bitterness, pithe. Wine is laser sharp but deep with depth.

2022 Stein Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett feinherb Alte Reben, CT 91(CA),
This was youthful and incredibly energetic with notes of delicious tangy peach and mouthwatering spice. As is typically the case with this bottling, it is slightly more giving than the Palmberg bottling and had a ripeness of fruit in the approach. But was wonderfully elegant and fresh with a great zippy finish. I saved half the bottle and finished after 5 days. This was even more energetic with vibrantly spiced apples and a deep undertone of slate. This wine is so easy to drink now, definitely hide them away if you have any hope to save some for later.

Importer notes: "Consider this Stein’s '1er Cru' vineyard; though it’s a 1er Cru vineyard with 70 to 80+ year-old ungrafted vines and a serious terroir of mostly blue slate. This is the 'other' Himmelreich and similar to its more famous sibling in Graach, the wines from this site always show a slimmer profile, a pronounced mineral fine-ness and lift. With only about 15 grams RS (just beyond dry), this is a wildly restrained and chiseled, old-school 'Feinherb.' I can’t say enough about this wine; for me it is nearly perfect."

2020 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits-St-Georges Vieilles Vignes, WA 89-91, The 2020 Nuits-Saint-Georges Vieilles Vignes is structured and concentrated, bursting with aromas of dark berries, plums, rose petals and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, deep and lively, it's well worth seeking out, but it will require more patience than its 2019 predecessor. The 2020 vintage has turned out very well indeed at Domaine Robert Chevillon. With finished alcohols around 13.7% to 13.9%, these are deep and powerful wines that remain nicely balanced, and they're built to age. Indeed, in their vibrant, concentrated style, they remind me somewhat of the domaine's 2016s, something one wouldn't have thought possible on paper. The bad news is that yields were down, the Chevillon brothers having lost the equivalent of one entire harvest over the course of the 2019, 2020 and 2021 vintages. As I've written before, this is one of my favorite addresses in all of Burgundy. Old vines, cultivated soils, moderate yields and long fermentations with entirely destemmed grapes are the order of the day at this address, with the Nuits-Saint-Georges Vieilles Vignes seeing some 20% new oak and the premiers crus 30%. Nuits' Tonnellerie Sirugue is the dominant supplier of barrels. (WK)

2019 Domaine Michel Noellat Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots, Inside Burgundy 89-91, This was just about to be bottled. From three plots, the biggest lower down. Deepish crimson, the nose is rather animal. There is a much richer depth of fruit and texture here, a mouthful of succulent fruit, but not quite the pure nobility here that I would prefer. Tasted Apr 2021.
