Another New Restaurant - Monte's!
Details
YES, another New Restaurant Alert!!! Join myself along with Ken and Ashley Bernstein at one of their favorite neighborhood spots, Monte's Trattoria! They are an old school Italian restaurant that has been open since 1918. A genuine part of NYC history! Ken has negotiated a favorable corkage fee and we will be dining in their upstairs dinning room!
They are located at: 97 Macdougal Street, in Greenwich Village. Here is a link to their menu..
So join us for this old school NYC wine night. For this dinner we will have one white wine from followed by 5 red wines. This should be fun!
We will have a 7pm reservation.
Just a reminder of our usual rules:
** The cost of this event is $69 and is for the cost of the wines and corkage fee only.
NOTE: Meetup has started charging a "Partner Fee" that is above and in addition to the listed price of the event. It comes to approximately $4 more for each RSVP. You will see this charge when you complete your rsvp and pay for the event. Sorry! Meetup+ members are exempt from this charge.
You will also have to pay the cost of your food (plus 33% for tax and tip). Please order at least two courses (i.e. a main dish and either appetizer or dessert) for your dinner. There are very few restaurants that allow us to bring our own wine for a Zero corkage fee. We must be good guests to encourage the restaurant to continue to be generous to us.
Please read and understand the group's cancellation policy. If you take spot, then cancel, and no one else takes the spot, you will not receive a refund or credit. No refunds or credits will be given for no-shows or late cancellations (unless someone else takes your spot). All cancellations are subject to a $7 service fee.
Please use public transportation - NO DRINKING AND DRIVING!
The Wines :
2021 Kovács Nimród Furmint Sky Nagy-Eged ($25) - From Eger, Hungary. This elegant Furmint comes from the best terroir in Eger, the Nagy-Eged hill as a precious gift from the Grand Superior terroir of the Nagy-Eged Mountain, born 350 meters above sea level. Harvested from just one hectare, every drop of the excellent raw material unmistakably reflect the complex limestone minerality of the place of its birth. This wine has named to honour the first grandchild (Skyler) of KNW founder-owner Nimród Kovács. It was fermented in oak barrels and aged in 225 liters and 500 liters barrels on lees for 10 months. The colour of the wine is glit. The start of the aroma is discrete and elegant. A complex wine, exhibiting pear and apricot flavors with limestone and flint overtones. Aged in Hungarian (89%) and French (11%) oak barrels. 60% of the barrels were second used, the others were older. Halperin Note: What is Furmint? I don't really know. Looking it up on Wine-searcher.com didn't really tell me much, although I'm pretty sure it is a DRY white wine.
2022 Martinelli "Bella Vigna" Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast ($40) - From the winery, "The Bella Vigna vineyard was planted to former winemaker Helen Turley's specifications and yields only 2-3 pounds of fruit, compared to the average vine that yields 20-30 pounds of fruit, creating more intense flavor, color, and uniformity. They are harvested only after current winemaker Brian Kvame tastes the fruit and is satisfied. The juice is fermented using indigenous yeasts and aged for 10 months in French oak barrels. The result is a dark burgundy/garnet-colored wine with aromas of almonds, cherries, spice and forest floor. This is not "old school" Pinot, as the rich flavors of black cherries and blueberries follow suit and lead to a long finish with supple tannins, gorgeous purity and a seamless texture."
2008 Domenico Clerico Barolo Pajana ($70) - WA 91 points, " The 2008 Barolo Pajana is surprisingly open and accessible in its fruit for a young Clerico Barolo, although the Nebbiolo tannins are, of course, quite prominent. The wine shows good plushness and generosity in its dark red fruit, mocha, spices, new leather, flowers and licorice, all of which flesh out on the supple finish. The visceral thrill of Clerico’s best wines is missing. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2022. "
2018 Bodega Catena Zapata Nicolás Catena Zapata ($100) - CT 92.5, From Argentia, WA 96 points, "The 2018 Nicolás Catena Zapata was produced with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon from Gualtallary (Adrianna vineyard, with the Cabernet Sauvignon interplanted with some Cabernet Franc) and 35% Malbec from Altamira (Nicasia vineyard). They no longer use grapes from Agrelo, and this is also a lot higher in Malbec than in other recent vintages. So, it has a very different profile, a change that started in 2017, with more contained ripeness and more freshness, and the wine is intense, keeping some of the Cabernet character (tobacco, blackberries) and the floral notes from Malbec. It comes through as balanced and harmonious, with very fine tannins and a long finish and perfect ripeness. This aims to revive the style of Bordeaux before phylloxera, from massal selection of ungrafted vines... 62,400 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2019."
2019 Feather Long Shadows Vinters Select ($75) - CT 93.3, JD 96 points, "The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Feather Vintage Select is all varietal and comes from the Bacchus and Tapteil vineyards. Deep purple-hued, it cuts a tighter, more focused path across the palate and is medium to full-bodied and beautifully concentrated, with ripe red and black fruits, plenty of background spicy oak, notes of scorched earth, lead pencil, and tobacco, and ripe yet building tannins. It's another brilliant wine from this label."
2018 Luca Malbec Nico ($90) - WA 93 points, "The 2018 Nico By Luca Malbec comes from the Rosas Vineyard planted in La Consulta in 1939. It fermented in 500-liter oak barrels, 50% of them new, where the wine matured for 20 months, despite which the wine is not oaky but shows some spicy and smoky undertones. It has a mixture of flowers, berries and herbs. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and citrus freshness with notes reminiscent of orange peel. Drink 2021-2028.
