The Wine List - Notes will be provided at dinner:
2023 Adegas Gran Vinum Albariño Rías Baixas Selección Especial ($23) -
No notes, be we have had this Spanish Albarino twice before and loved it. My last bottle.
2018 Liberalia Enologica S.L. Tinta de Toro Toro Enebral ($14)- A Tempranillo, James Suckling 93 points (which in the real world means 88+), "“A firm, tight red for the region with blue fruit, dark chocolate, walnut and some hazelnut. It’s full and very tight with intense tannins and a flavorful finish. Linear and racy. One that will age very well. Better after 2021.”
2020 La Vizcaína Bierzo Lomas de Valtuille Las Gundiñas ($45) - We have had this Spanish Mencia before and loved it. Group member Jose gave this 92 points, saying, "Brooding, complex, and firmly rooted in Valtuille clay, this delivers a fleshy, horizontal mid-palate wrapped in a savory, rustic reduction and smoky funk. Dark cherry, wild bramble, and faded florals emerge with air, backed by a dense fruit core. The 100% whole-cluster stem inclusion manifests as highly pronounced, chewy, and gripping tannins that anchor a long, vertical finish. This provided a stellar terroir contrast to the 2019 Pico Ferreira (Paradela) opened a few days ago; where that limestone-driven bottling was higher pitched, electric, and chiseled with chalky lace, the 2020 Las Gundiñas is distinctly broader, fleshier, slightly funkier, and far more assertively structured. It represents an excellent, low-intervention technical record that requires a heavy decant or short-term cellaring to integrate its powerful stem grip and unwrap the reduction. Excellent effort."
2021 The Walls Vineyards Wonderful Nightmare ($57) - A Tempranillo from WA State, Owen Bargreen, 95 points, "This Tempranillo has 25% Mourvèdre blended in. Inky in the glass, this offers beautiful stony character on the palate, alongside dark currants, wet stone and pipe tobacco notes with blackberry compote. Delicious and rich, enjoy over the next ten years to come. This is seriously good stuff. Drink 2024-2036 (drink 2024-2036)" BONUS points for the winery, one of my Fraternity Brothers is the Associate Winemaker at the Walls!
2018 Tulpen Cellars Tempranillo Yellow Bird Vineyard ($45) - From WA State's, Walla Walla Valley, "The final vintage of Tempranillo from Yellowbird, as the owner has decided to phase it out of the Tulpen lineup. It’s even more limited than the Merlot, with just 71cs total production. Listed alc is 14.8%, and this is 100% Tempranillo."
