A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini tells the story of two Afghan women, Mariam and Laila, who are forced to share a home with the abusive Rasheed in Kabul. Initially strangers who come to hate each other, they eventually form a deep bond and friendship as they endure Rasheed's cruelty and the escalating violence of the Afghan civil war and the rise of the Taliban. The novel culminates in Mariam's sacrifice so Laila and her children can escape, and ends with Laila living a new life with her love, Tariq, rebuilding Kabul and carrying on Mariam's memory.
