Lesser Known Dacks: Crane Mountain Climbing

Details

Crane Mountain is a climbing area in the Adirondacks west of Lake George that includes over a hundred routes mostly ranging from about 5.5 to 5.10, including single and multi-pitch routes. There are some sport and top rope routes here, but the good stuff is multi-pitch trad, so if you can't lead trad please make sure you have a partner who's interested in either top roping or sport or having you as a follower.

It's about a four and a half hour drive from New York. My current thinking is to drive up Friday (October 18th) after work. There is a designated camping area about 100 meters from the trailhead, so although it's backcountry (i.e., no facilities), it's still car camping in that you can lug your lawn chair and cooler down the path. There are good quality multi-pitch climbs within about 30 minutes of the trailhead, though some approaches (e.g., the summit area climbs) are much longer. Full disclosure: I've never been.

I'll check the weather about a week before the cllmb, and if there's too much rain forecast, or if no one signs up, I'll cancel.
