Postal Crisis of 1775 with Vernon Morris, Jr.
Details
In 1775, communication was the lifeline of an empire, and both the American colonists and the British government understood its importance. As tensions rose, Britain sought to maintain order and protect its interests by ensuring that official correspondence and intelligence remained secure. These measures, however, created growing frustration among the colonies, who felt increasingly restricted in their ability to share news and ideas. The Postal Crisis of 1775 emerged from this complex moment—an early flashpoint where administrative control, political loyalty, and the desire for self-governance collided. This hour-long webinar explores the crisis not as a tale of villains and heroes, but as a nuanced turning point that shaped the path to independence.
Designed for history enthusiasts of all ages, the presentation highlights how both sides faced difficult decisions in an uncertain world. You’ll learn how colonial leaders responded by building an alternative mail system, and how British officials viewed these actions within the broader challenge of managing a vast and restless empire. Through vivid storytelling and surprising insights, you’ll come away with a deeper appreciation for how communication—something we take for granted today—played a pivotal role in a rapidly changing political landscape. Join us to rediscover a moment when the humble mailbag carried the weight of a nation’s future.
