About the talk:
Climate change isn’t something that only governments or scientists deal with. It’s shaped every day by how we work, what we build, and where we put our time and money.

This talk explores how our roles in technology can have a positive impact when they’re pointed in the right direction. Having gained skills from the Startmate Fellowship and the local Climate Champions program, or volunteering for the Hunter Water Desalination Plant Community Committee, I can tell you that my most meaningful impact comes from where I spend my workday.
Working for years as a Digital Product Manager in the mining industry, which has many energy-intensive assets, using digital products in innovative ways can make the assets more efficient, which can reduce the energy, water and ultimately carbon used. I’ll share stories about technical expertise and personal influence can create change within companies, through the apps, websites and data we use.
We know that there is a cost to mining and using technology, but we forget that our efforts creating or using technology can drive a positive difference.
So what will we choose to spend our time on? Or the employers we choose?
Beyond our jobs, our commercial choices matter too — what products and services do we support in our home? I’ll share how can use technology at home to optimise our own assets. What do we invest in with our finances, our superannuation?
This session is about leverage: us. Using the skills you already have, the choices you already make with your home, and the time you already spend at work to help drive a climate future we can all thrive in. We are the drivers of climate change, now.
