Short Talk - David Coxon - What you can do with a tiny amount of data and a bit of lateral thinking.

Abstract:

Museums and Galleries around the world rely heavily on donations, but as electronic payments have become more popular, people are carrying less cash and the days on the humble donations box looked like they may be numbered. until contactless came along and for the first time galleries are now able to collecting data on the money being donated. Realistically we are talking about a list of transaction dates and times but with a bit of creative thinking and some cross referencing, it is enough to start doing some analysis.

Long Talk - Penny Pegman - Communicating insights from data to help inform the design of new services for Universal Credit

Abstract:

Data is (often) useless unless you communicate it effectively. This talk will explore how data scientists in the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) have worked with mixed disciplinary agile project delivery teams to bring data insights to help shape the way new services are developed and designed for Universal Credit. It will show how R markdown and the flexdashboard package have been used to communicate data insights to a non-specialist audience to enable them to understand the information and make evidence based decisions.
