Data Science in the water industry: Challenges and case study
Northumbrian Water Group (NWG) treats and delivers water for 4.7 million customers and manages 450 treatment works, 1354 pumping stations and 56,600 km of water and sewer pipes. The operation of such a large asset base requires to make short and long term decisions every day that can impact the generations to come. It is in that context that the Asset Modelling team provides tools and insights to help achieve NWG’s outcomes. In this presentation I will talk about:
- Northumbrian Water and the role and objectives of the Modelling team;
- The variety of topics we are exposed to, our common data and modelling challenges and some the tools we use;
- The development of a successful decision support tool driven by a Machine Learning model combined with many other data processing elements to prevent river pollution.
