This trail is a challenging but scenic route that goes through woods for much of the trail. Along the way, you will pass many campsites and points of interest, such as Brandenburg Steps, Blood Mountain Overlook, and Blood Mountain Shelter. Also, you will pass several intersections: Jarrard Gap, Duncan Ridge Trail Junction, and Freeman Trail Junction. The Freeman Trail is especially difficult, so please be extra careful. Byron Reece Trailhead Parking has limited parking spots and no restrooms.

We will have lunch at the picnic shelter in Lake Winfield Scott for about 30 minutes. Average pace of 2.5 to 3mph. If you would like to go faster or slower or do trail running, you are more than welcome to do so but please have the AllTrails map downloaded on your phone before you start the hike.

Weather Forecast: Mostly sunny and pleasant with high 75F and low 59F.

Please bring enough water or electrolytes for hydration. Light snacks, protein bars or granola bars are also recommended along with hiking poles if you need those.
