A Global Landmark: Record-Breaking Stats
The Robbinsville Akshardham is a historic achievement in architecture and devotion. It is officially the largest Hindu temple in the Western Hemisphere and the second-largest in the world. Here are some incredible facts about what we will be seeing:
- Construction: It took over 12 years and the tireless dedication of 12,500 volunteers from around the globe to complete.
- Materials: The structure is composed of nearly 2 million cubic feet of stone, including Carrara marble from Italy and limestone from Bulgaria, which was shipped to India to be hand-carved before being assembled in New Jersey like a giant 3D jigsaw puzzle.
- Scale: The site spans over 180 acres, with the main Mahamandir standing 191 feet tall. It features 10,000 statues, 236 ornate pillars, and 9 massive domes.
- Longevity: Designed according to ancient Indian architectural Shastras, the temple is built to last for 1,000 years.
Understanding the Roots: Hinduism and BAPS
Hinduism is one of the world’s oldest living religions, originating over 5,000 years ago in India. It is a diverse tradition that emphasizes Dharma (righteous living), Karma (action and consequence), and the pursuit of spiritual realization.
What to Expect:
- Architectural Wonder: We will see thousands of hand-carved statues and intricate pillars made from Italian Carrara marble and Indian pink sandstone.
- Cultural Experience: I will act as your guide to explain the religious significance, the stories behind the carvings, and the history of how this massive structure was built by thousands of volunteers.
- Peaceful Environment: We will walk through the "Mayur Dwar" (Peacock Gate) and enjoy the tranquil reflection pools and gardens.
- Vegetarian Dining: After our tour, we can visit the onsite Shayona food court to enjoy authentic, fresh Indian vegetarian snacks and meals.
Important Guidelines & Etiquette (Please Read):
To respect the sanctity of the temple and the local community, please follow these rules:
