June Book Club Meeting!

Details

Dear members,

May's meeting was well-attended and we had a lively chat! It was great to see both regular and new members. People generally liked Elif Shafak's book and it achieved an overall score of 4 out of 5.

June's book is: Alasdair Gray, 'Poor Things'. The recent film with Emma Stone as the leading character, Bella, was based upon this book, although the film made some significant changes to the plot, annoying Glaswegians everywhere! I suspect that this might be a bit of a 'marmite book', but it won the Whitbread Novel Award and the Guardian Fiction Prize, and it had some pretty good reviews:

'A magnificently brisk, funny, dirty, brainy book' London Review of Books

'Visionary, ornate and outrageous' The Independent

'Witty and delightfully written' New York Times

'A brilliant marriage of technique, intelligence, and art.' Kirkus Reviews

'The greatest Scottish novelist since Sir Walter Scott' Anthony Burgess

'Those who, like me, are unsure if they are Alasdair Gray fans or not, ought to fall on Poor Things with delight, and not just because of the almost excessive beauty of its appearance' Philip Hensher, Spectator

For those of you who like to read ahead, here are the books for the next few months:
July: Jane Austen, 'Emma'
August: James Patterson: 'Along Came a Spider'
September: Anthony Doerr: 'All the Light We Cannot See'
October: Lee Ypi: 'Free'
November: Amor Towles: 'A Gentleman in Moscow'.

I hope to see you in June! In the meantime, have a great month and keep well!

Best Wishes

Tracey
