While many people think of British culture as being very proper and formal, think again. From a countess who poisoned her husband to marry the king's kept man, to a diplomat who claimed that he was really a woman, to a king who had three mistresses simultaneously, British history is full of racy stories and colorful personalities. It's time to uncover these characters and scandalous moments through the art of London's National Portrait Gallery.
Join New York Adventure Club as we explore select artworks throughout London’s National Portrait Gallery that showcase Britain's scandalous past over the past 600 years.
Led by Dr. Andrew Lear, a world-renowned expert on gender history, our virtual art journey will include:
- The story of Anne Boleyn, the royal mistress who became Queen for 100 days
- Scandalous tales of the royal lovers including Queen Elizabeth I ("The Virgin Queen") and her almost-marriage, King Charles II and his many mistresses, Queen Anne and her lady companions, and King Edward VII and the special chair he kept in a Paris brothel
- The high end courtesans of 18th century London
- The Chevalier d'Eon and the betting pools on whether he was male or female
- Lady Hamilton and her ménage à trois with the great naval hero, Lord Nelson
- Why English writer Lord Byron was referred to as “mad, bad, and dangerous to know”
- The legacy of the Bloomsbury Set, a group of English artists and intellects who shared a belief in the importance of the arts and in the necessity of "free love" — as Dorothy Parker once said, "they lived in squares, painted in circles, and loved in triangles"
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Andrew — any and all questions about Britain's scandalous history are welcomed and encouraged!
