Widely considered one the most pivotal shows in the history of the American theater, Show Boat (1927) was a theatrical trailblazer. Not only did it mark the first time a major production used the musical comedy format to tell a serious story, but it also was the first time everything in a musical production — the music, lyrics, book, dances, and cast — were all utilized for the goal of delineating character and moving a narrative forward. How exactly did this production get its start and eventually become one of the most successful shows of all time? From being frequently revived on Broadway and on stages all over the world, to its three feature adaptations and numerous television versions, it's time to uncover the Broadway musical that changed everything.
Join New York Adventure Club for a deep dive discussion of the Broadway sensation Show Boat that celebrates the history, backstory, and legacy of this milestone work of the American musical theater.
Led by award-winning author Will Friedwald, who is widely considered one of the nation's most prolific music writers, our journey through this masterful play on its 95th anniversary will include:
- The full story behind Edna Ferber's novel, Show Boat, which transformed her from an unknown American writer to a bonafide literary legend
- The backgrounds of the show's two creators, Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II, two giants of the theater (and the Broadway musical in particular)
- An analysis of the show's relationship with the issue of social justice, a rare and early example of forwarding the notion of equal civil rights with its serious story that underscored the tragedy of segregation
- The role and evolution of famed theater manager Florenz Ziegfeld, who took a great risk by letting this unorthodox production take his stage — a decision that is today considered his greatest contribution to world culture
- A look at Show Boat on the screen, from the experimental part-talkie version of 1929, to the definitive 1936 cinematic interpretation by James Whale, to the better known (and highly successful) Arthur Freed production of 1951
- How the Show Boat brand has flourished through the decades, from the first revival in 1932 to the classic Hal Prince production of the 1990s, which still stands today as the longest running edition so far
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Will — any and all questions about Show Boat are welcomed and encouraged!
