In August 2020, the New York Times designated Harlem as "New York’s Most Storied Neighborhood." What are some of the sights and stories that make this neighborhood of neighborhoods — among them, Central Harlem — one of the city's most iconic? From important institutions, public works of art, and homes of famous people; to commemorations of great African Americans, rows of brownstones, parks, and much more; it's time to uncover like never before the awesome array of treasures scattered throughout the most famous part of Harlem.
Join New York Adventure Club for a curated virtual stroll through Central Harlem, one of the most iconic sections of New York's diverse and distinct neighborhoods.
Led by licensed New York City tour guide Leigh Hallingby, our digital showcase of this incredible neighborhood between West 138th Street and 122nd Street will include:
- An overview of Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, a vast and historic library, whose tag line is “where every month in Black History Month”
- Strivers Row, a stunning and architecturally unique block of homes that was developed in the late 1800s, but sat empty for a quarter century before it was finally occupied and ultimately became a New York City landmark
- The Abyssinian Baptist Church, the most well-known church in Harlem, whose most famous minister represented Harlem in Congress for 26 years and is today the most honored person in the community
- The Harlem Hospital Murals, a historic cycle of paintings that dates to the Depression era and represents one of the first commissions ever given to African Americans by the federal government
- Harlem’s most renowned theater, the Apollo, and its Walk of Fame
- A row house that played a vital role in the American civil rights movement and in the passage of the Civil Rights Bill in 1964 and the Voting Rights Bill in 1965
Stick around afterward for a Q&A with Leigh — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
