She stepped beyond the margins of mainstream society to capture the overlooked, the misunderstood, and the strikingly unique. But what drove this mid-century photographer to chronicle the diverse fabric of American identity? It's time to take a closer look at the work of a groundbreaking artist whose portraits continue to provoke, challenge, and inspire.

Join New York Adventure Club as we examine the photographic masterpieces of Diane Arbus (1923-1971), a pioneering American photographer whose powerful portraits from the 1960s offer a raw, compelling study of identity, vulnerability, and the many faces of American life.

Led by art historian and educator Sylvia Laudien-Meo, this unique experience will include:

  • A biographical background on Diane Arbus and her early career in fashion photography
  • An overview of Arbus’ mentors, including Lisette Model and Berenice Abbott
  • A discussion of Arbus’ photographic approach, emphasizing connection over candidness in her portrait work
  • An analysis of personal presentation, and how subjects balanced exposure and protection in their appearance
  • An exploration of the gap between intention and effect, and how audience perception can alter the understanding of a portrait
  • A deep dive into her photographic series, including portraits of youth, couples, performers, and everyday New Yorkers that defined her 1960s work
  • A comparison with contemporaries, such as Garry Winogrand and Lee Friedlander, to contextualize her place in modern photography

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Sylvia — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
