*This webinar is part of our NYAC Summer Encore Series — a limited-time showcase of archived programs, re-airing exclusively this August*
While New York City has allowed many forms of societal rule-breaking over the generations, women artists have often found themselves bound by old-world conventions. Regardless of the success they achieved while living, most fell into obscurity upon death. Who were these artists providing profound commentary on their times, and what challenges did they — and urban women overall — face in their pursuit to become professional artists? It's time to take a deep look at the artworks of several notable New York City women artists to resuscitate, and celebrate, their remarkable art careers.
Join New York Adventure Club for a three-part series that explores the art and achievements of notable women artists living and working in New York City during the 19th and early 20th centuries. In Part One, we'll examine the portfolio of Lilly Martin Spencer (1822-1902), and how this artist broke the chains of convention by balancing her chaotic home life with her career aspirations.
Led by American Art Historian Rena Tobey, our artistic deep dive will include:
- A look at the young artist who took an unconventional route to career success
- An understanding of the American Art Union, its effect on the American consumer, and its criteria for supporting and promoting Spencer
- An exploration of the day-to-day life, and anxieties, of urban, white women as a new middle-class emerges
- An analysis of Spencer’s wry and witty ‘kitchen’ series of paintings, satirizing gender roles and middle class propriety
- A consideration of how women artists’ careers are made, perpetuated, and lost to history
