The very first World's Fair of 1851 in Hyde Park, London didn't just kick-start the global movement to showcase society's greatest innovations — it also marked the beginning of mass tourism, as the six-month exhibition attracted a whopping 6 million visitors. And with so many tourists looking for a place to stay, London's luxury hotel industry was born seemingly overnight — after all, hoteliers and financiers saw an opportunity to provide wealthier visitors proper accommodations during their travels. This is the incredible story of London's most historic luxury hotels built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many of which are still operating until this very day.
Join New York Adventure Club as we unearth the stories and secrets behind London's four greatest Victorian and Edwardian hotels that are still in operation — The Langham, Savoy, Claridges, and Ritz.
Led by award winning London Blue Badge Tour Guide Simon Whitehouse, our virtual showcase of London’s historic hotels will include:
- An overview of the Great Exhibition of 1851 and why its credited with giving birth to London's hotel industry
- A deep dive into London’s oldest hotels, including The Langham, Savoy, Claridges, and the Ritz
- A discussion around the extraordinary theatrical impresario who financed London's first luxury hotels 'luxury' hotel
- The key role that hotels played during World War II
- The fascinating celebrity clientele who made London’s hotels their "home away from home," including Katharine Hepburn, Elaine Stritch, Tallulah Bankhead, and Charlie Chaplin
- Stories from the suites, including one that became part of Yugoslavia in 1945 and another which was tragically a Prime Minster's very last
