*This webinar is part of our NYAC Summer Encore Series — a limited-time showcase of archived programs, re-airing exclusively this August*
The Gilded Age, also referred to as the American Renaissance, marked the first time that the titans of American finance and industry had more wealth than their European counterparts. With that wealth came the need to have any property they touched dripping in architectural detail and embellishment that rivaled the great cultural capitals of the world like London, Paris, and Rome — enter the Beaux-Arts movement. How did this style define New York City, and specifically, it's centers of knowledge? It's time to get an exclusive glimpse at some of the city's greatest Beaux-Arts rooms and buildings, and dive into the lives of the most prominent millionaires in American history.
Join New York Adventure Club for a four-part series that explores the stories and architecture of New York City’s Beaux-Arts movement during the Gilded Age. In Part One, we'll uncover the finest public and private libraries, located in buildings that aren't just Beaux-Arts monuments in New York, but monuments of New York.
Led by architect Phillip James Dodd — author of An American Renaissance: Beaux-Arts Architecture on New York City with foreword by Julian Fellowes — our virtual experience will include:
- The founding of the New York Public Library with the merger of the Astor, Lenox and Tilden Libraries, and the design of what is one of the most recognizable Beaux-Arts buildings in America
- The story behind Stanford White’s design of The Gould Memorial Library, a Beaux-Arts Pantheon of Learning — that history has forgotten — overlooking the Harlem River, on what used to be the campus of NYU
- The founding of The University Club “for the purpose of literature and art by establishing and maintaining a library,” and the design by Charles McKim of what is arguably the greatest room in New York City
- The Pierpont Morgan Library, a majestic repository for J.P. Morgan’s private collection — a collection that rivaled any in the world
- Discussing the work of some of the most prominent architects of The Gilded Age – Richard Morris Hunt, Charles McKim, Carrère & Hastings, and Stanford White – and their collaboration with artists such as Daniel Chester French, Henry Siddons Mowbray, and Louis Comfort Tiffany
- The conflicting interests of the infamous Robber Barons of the era — ruthless, and sometimes unethical, many of these captains of industry would also become some of the greatest patrons of the civic arts
