New York City — the largest and foremost of America’s urban centers — is famed for the tight-knit character of its many residential districts spread across its five boroughs. From the glitter of the Upper West Side to the distant shores of City Island and Lighthouse Hill, it's time to explore these distinctive slices of the Big Apple and see how they shaped the identity of the city’s cultural and architectural landscape.
Join New York Adventure Club for a four-part series on the history of New York City's neighborhood architecture, with a focus on some of Gotham's most celebrated addresses — and a few that have avoided the radar. In Part One: Manhattan, we'll explore historic neighborhoods up and down the island that have come to define the city's charm and character.
Led by architectural historian David V. Griffin of Landmark Branding, this digital showcase featuring a selection of unique structures will include:
- A brief overview of the Greenwich Village Historic District, one of the largest in the U.S.
- A close look at SoHo’s transition from a warehouse wasteland to international arts center
- The rich African-American history of Harlem and its enduring influence
- Neighborhoods like NoMad and the High Line that have risen in popularity over the past decade
- Architectural highlights from around the borough, including apartment buildings, mansions, cast-iron buildings, parks and gardens
- An in-depth look at each building's construction, context, and current status, with a focus on how culture and innovation drive architectural symbolism
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with David — any and all questions about these unique buildings are welcomed and encouraged!
