In 1930s Paris, a generation of Jewish writers and thinkers in exile transformed the city into a crucible of resistance, reflection, and radical new ideas. How did their poetry, philosophy, and political thought leave an enduring mark on France and beyond in one of Europe's darkest chapters? It's time to step into the world of poetic defiance and intellectual resilience that shaped the course of modern history.

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the remarkable constellation of Jewish writers, philosophers, and intellectuals who made Paris their refuge during the 1930s and 1940s, and how their creative and intellectual legacies shaped modern European culture and thought.

Led by Edith de Belleville — French licensed tour guide, author, and attorney-at-law — our digital showcase will include:

  • Benjamin Fondane and Paul Celan, and how their poetry grappled with memory, identity, and exile
  • Exiled German thinkers in Paris, including Walter Benjamin, Hannah Arendt, and Norbert Elias, whose time in the city shaped major currents in philosophy and sociology
  • French Jewish intellectuals like René Cassin and Marc Bloch, who turned resistance and scholarship into acts of courage
  • Hélène Berr’s wartime diary, and why her voice remains a powerful testimony of daily life under Nazi occupation
  • Paris as a cultural refuge, and how it became a lifeline for Jewish émigrés fleeing persecution and violence across Europe

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A session with Edith — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
