Before Gatsby parties and Hollywood myth-making, Long Island’s Gold Coast was the original playground of America’s elite — where industrial titans built palatial estates to rival Europe’s grandest homes. At Planting Fields in Oyster Bay, one of these storied properties still endures: a 409-acre horticultural masterpiece anchored by a 65-room Tudor Revival mansion, built for insurance magnate William Robertson Coe and his heiress wife, Mai. Now’s your chance to uncover the home and grounds of one of Long Island’s last remaining estates.

Join New York Adventure Club for an exploration of Long Island’s Planting Fields, beginning with a guided landscape tour across portions of the estate’s historic grounds, followed by a private visit inside the grand Main House.

Led by two separate Planting Fields docents, our unique experience will include:

  • A discussion of the Coe family’s rise and legacy, including their journey from industrial fortune to the creation of one of Long Island’s most ambitious estates
  • A guided walk through the estate’s signature gardens, such as the Blue Pool Garden, Rose Garden and the Azalea Path, while learning how each space reflected the family’s taste and the era’s horticultural trends
  • A scenic loop around the exterior of the Main House, with stops at architectural highlights, ornamental plantings, and historic landscape features designed by the Olmsted Brothers and other prominent designers
  • A private tour inside the Main House after public hours, featuring period- furnished rooms, 13th to 19th-century-stained glass, commissioned murals, and rotating exhibitions
  • Insights into the estate’s design, transformation, and preservation, from its early 20th-century origins to its present role as a cultural and botanical landmark

See you there!

*Transportation to Planting Fields, and $8 parking fee for those arriving by car, are not included.
**Due to limited food options at Planting Fields, attendees are highly encouraged to bring their own snacks. Food and drink are not permitted inside the Main House.
***Please note that the Main House does not have an elevator between floors.
