From the dawn of the Stone Age to our present-day, self-expression has been a crucial part of human history; people have used their time and resources to beautify and adorn both themselves and their surroundings. Through the lens of European art, it's time to explore the role that fashion and makeup has played throughout the ages in allowing people to express either who they want to be, or the person society expects them to be.

Join [New York Adventure Club](https://www.nyadventureclub.com) as we explore fashion and makeup in art, and how the two are intrinsically connected to each other — both drawing inspiration from one another while also giving us a window into lives once lived.

Led by art historian, museum guide, and New York Adventure Club lecturer Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff, this virtual experience will include:

* **What natural materials were once used as makeup** long before the modern cosmetics industry, and how it was stored
* **Who primarily used makeup** in the early days of human civilization, and the special occasions it was applied
* The **meaning of makeup and the acceptance of its use**, with a comparison between different historical moments
* **The historical use of adornments** often associated with our modern times, like multiple piercings or men with earrings
* **How posh and wealthy individuals used hairpieces**, hair coloring and outrageous hairdos, found in counter culture today
* The **use of clothes to accentuate one's societal standing**, masculinity, association with the Virgin Mary, or likeness of the ancient Romans (to name but a few!)
* Art that showcases **cross-dressing and rebellion**

Afterward, we'll have a **Q&A with Mariska** — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!

**About Mariska**
Mariska is a Social Psychologist by trade but took up her love for the arts again after the birth of her children. ​
Heavily pregnant with number 3, Mariska finished her MA at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, in Dutch Baroque Art. Soon after this she was lucky enough to lecture for the most wonderful group of students. She decided this was what she wanted to do and set up Art Historical London offering art historical lectures, courses, tours, travel and events from London and Amsterdam, and since 2020 online. ​
Fully accredited in the UK to teach the over 16, Mariska also lectures for NAFDAS, an arts education society with members in the UK and Mainland Europe, New Zealand and Australia. She is a lecturer with the public program of the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London, and can provide live, online and recorded lectures for groups or individuals.
