A mountaintop fort. A daring river crossing. The narrow escape that saved a revolution. What really happened in November 1776 when George Washington’s army fled Fort Lee after the fall of Fort Washington, with British troops in hot pursuit? Timed with Fort Lee’s annual Revolutionary War re-enactment event, get ready to retrace the footsteps of Washington's “Retreat to Victory” in a very unique way.

Join [New York Adventure Club](https://www.nyadventureclub.com "https://www.nyadventureclub.com") for an immersive urban hike through Revolutionary War history — and across state lines — as we retrace the critical events of November 1776 that forced General George Washington and his army to abandon New York, retreat into New Jersey, and lay the groundwork for one of the greatest comebacks in American military history.

Led by seasoned New Jersey educator and amateur historian Dr. Kirk Barrett, our two-mile-long land and bridge experience will include:

* **An overview of the pivotal 1776 campaign**, from the fall of New York to Washington’s daring retreat that helped save the Continental Army
* **A visit to the original site of Fort Washington in Washington Heights**, and a discussion of the fort’s fall and its consequences for the American war effort
* **A discussion of Washington’s retreat while enjoying sweeping views of the Hudson River and Manhattan skyline** from the George Washington Bridge
* **A guided exploration of Fort Lee Historic Park**, including reconstructed Revolutionary War encampments and artillery positions atop the New Jersey Palisades
* **Fascinating stories of Fort Lee’s later transformation**, such as its early silent film production history (and the origin of the word “cliffhanger”) to the engineering marvel of the George Washington Bridge

\*Please bring water, snacks, comfortable shoes, and warm clothes as we'll be outdoors and on our feet for the duration of the experience. This one-way experience is about two miles long.
\*\*While this experience includes educational content along the route, please note that it's mostly an urban hike versus guided history tour.
\*\*\*Our experience will begin at the site of Fort Washington in Washington Heights in Manhattan, then cross the George Washington Bridge by foot and end at Fort Lee Park in New Jersey. After viewing the re-enactments and museum at your leisure, return to Manhattan on your own either by foot or by bus as explained below. Alternatively, you may start at Fort Lee on the Jersey side and, after a brief tour of the Park, accompany the guide on foot over the bridge to Fort Washington to meet the group (see bullet point below for more details on that option).
\*\*\*\*If you plan to drop off your car at Fort Lee Park, we suggest parking no later than 9:15am and joining the guide, who will first walk across the bridge to the Manhattan meeting point. The guide's contact information will be shared in the confirmation email.

**About Dr. Kirk Barrett**
Dr. Kirk Barrett is an amatuer historian, environmental engineer, and seasoned public educator with a passion for Revolutionary War history and walking tours that bring the past to life. A longtime resident of South Orange, New Jersey, Kirk has led this tour and other history and nature-focused hikes and programs for local organizations, including the South Orange-Maplewood Adult School (SOMAS). His research-based storytelling style blends military insight, cultural context, and vivid landscape interpretation, making complex history feel both immediate and personal.

By Subway:
Take the A train to 181st Street. Meeting location is three blocks north of station.

By Bus:
Take the M4 bus to the Fort Washington Ave/W 183 St. stop. Meeting location is across the street.
After the tour, walk 10 minutes from Fort Lee Park to the [G W Bridge Plaza East bus stop](https://maps.app.goo.gl/KvPyS1GgddENLUkNA "https://maps.app.goo.gl/KvPyS1GgddENLUkNA") (Zone 1). Take any NJ Transit Bus to the next and final stop of GW Bridge Bus Terminal, which is close to many MTA bus transit stops.

By Car:
Metered parking is available at Fort Lee Park ($2.50/hour).
If you plan to drop off your car at Fort Lee Park, we suggest parking no later than 10:00am and either joining the guide — who will first walk across the bridge to the Manhattan meeting point — or taking the bus from [G W Bridge Plaza East bus stop](https://maps.app.goo.gl/KvPyS1GgddENLUkNA "https://maps.app.goo.gl/KvPyS1GgddENLUkNA") to the GW Bridge Bus Terminal and walking to the starting location.
