What happens when a descendant of one of America’s Founding Fathers becomes the center of one of the Gilded Age’s most sensational scandals, filled with privilege, deceit, and tragedy? This is the true story of Robert Ray Hamilton, great-grandson of Alexander Hamilton, whose ill-fated marriage to a woman with a shadowy past made national headlines and helped launch the modern tabloid press.

Join New York Adventure Club for a fascinating look at the shocking saga of Robert Ray Hamilton and Evangeline Steele — a scandal in the 1890s of forged vows, stolen motherhood, and courtroom spectacle that gripped the nation from Atlantic City to Wyoming’s frontier.

Led by Bill Shaffer, author of The Scandalous Hamiltons, our unique virtual experience will include:

  • The fall of a Hamilton heir — how one of America’s most prominent families found itself at the center of a scandal no amount of wealth or pedigree could contain
  • A marriage built on deception — the shadowy courtship between Robert Ray Hamilton and Evangeline Steele that would soon spiral into chaos
  • The rise of a new kind of news — how Joseph Pulitzer’s New York World and rival papers sensationalized the story and ignited America’s appetite for scandal
  • Detectives and reporters on the trail — the relentless pursuit of truth (and headlines) by police investigators and tabloid journalists
  • A courtroom turned stage — how the ensuing legal battles blurred the line between justice and entertainment
  • The legacy of a national obsession — from Riverside Park’s Hamilton Fountain to today’s celebrity media, how one 19th-century scandal still echoes in American culture

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Bill — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
