At first glance, Rock Creek Park in the heart of Washington, DC might seem like just another stretch of peaceful woods — but behind its tranquil trails lies a dramatic and unexpected past. How did this wild landscape become the nation’s first urban national park, and what stories have unfolded beneath its forest canopy? From ancient settlements and Civil War fortifications to mill-powered industry and presidential retreats, it's time to uncoversthe rich, layered history of one of America’s most distinctive urban oases.

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the origin story of Rock Creek Park — a vast green refuge that has shaped, and been shaped by, the people, industries, and visionaries of Washington, DC for over two centuries.

Led by Carolyn Muraskin, architectural historian and founder of DC Design Tours, our unique virtual experience will include:

  • Peirce Mill — A beautifully restored 1820s gristmill that powered Washington’s early agriculture and industry
  • Boulder Bridge — A quintessential example of Olmsted-era “parkitecture,” blending seamlessly into the rugged natural landscape
  • Peirce-Klingle Mansion — A historic farmhouse turned ranger headquarters, anchoring more than a century of change on the park’s western ridge
  • Smithsonian National Zoo — Founded in 1889 to protect endangered species, this pioneering urban zoo sits right along Rock Creek’s winding banks
  • Pulpit Rock — One of the park’s most dramatic natural features, offering a glimpse into the geologic forces that shaped the creek gorge — and a favorite hiking spot of President Theodore Roosevelt
  • Fort DeRussy — A Civil War-era earthwork fortification built to defend the capital, now quietly hidden within the park’s dense woods

Stick around afterward for a Q&A with Carolyn — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
