A newly transformed gallery can reshape the way we see art, inviting visitors to experience familiar collections through a fresh lens. The Metropolitan Museum of Art achieved exactly that in 2025, unveiling a revitalized Michael C. Rockefeller Wing that reimagines how we engage with its celebrated holdings, important new additions, and contemporary commissions. What new insights emerge when its artworks are presented in a space designed to honor their depth and complexity? Get ready to step into this bold renewal and discover how thoughtful design can illuminate the stories and meaning woven into these remarkable works.

Join New York Adventure Club for a three-part series exploring the renovated Michael C. Rockefeller Wing at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, home to one of the world’s most important collections of art from Africa, the Ancient Americas, and Oceania. In Part One: Arts of Oceania, we’ll trace the rich diversity of artistic expression across Australasia, Melanesia, Micronesia, Polynesia, and New Zealand to uncover how these works reveal belief systems, identities, and cultural continuities that resonate across time.

Led by Sylvia Laudien-Meo — art historian, museum educator, and NYC tour guide — this art-centric virtual journey will feature:

  • A background of the Met’s collection of Indigenous Art and its historical connection to Nelson and Michael Rockefeller
  • Michael Rockefeller’s early career and 1961 disappearance, and how his pursuits shaped the museum’s collection
  • A closer look at the newly renovated gallery architecture, redesigned by Kulapat Yantrasast of WHY Architecture, Beyer Blinder Belle, and The Met’s Design Department
  • Key highlights from the Oceania collection, such as the Ceremonial House Ceiling, Asmat funerary poles, Vanuatu slit gongs, masks, shields, ritual objects, and textiles
  • Contemporary works by Fiona Pardington and Nonggirrnga Marawili, offering modern perspectives connected to longstanding traditions

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Sylvia — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
