Home to famed architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Chicago is often thought of as the birthplace of American architecture. What made this Midwest city such an architectural powerhouse, one whose magnificent skyline has cast its shadow across global architecture? It's time for a special look at the sites and landmarks that define the Windy City.

Join New York Adventure Club for a three-part series on the history of Chicago architecture, where we'll examine the buildings and structures that helped define the broader American architecture movement. In Part Three: Rise of a Modern Metropolis, we’ll review post-war, Modernist, and Contemporary Chicago and see how the forms of Wright and Sullivan were streamlined by new technologies into the Second Chicago School.

Led by architectural historian David V. Griffin of Landmark Branding, this digital showcase featuring a selection of unique structures will include:

  • The rise of the "curtain wall" buildings and how design changed with non-structural outer walls
  • The Mid-Century Chicago style
  • An overview of architect Mies van der Rohe and his “Less is more” mantra
  • A look at Brutalism and Organic Architecture throughout the city
  • Examples of Contemporary Chicago architecture

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with David — any and all questions about these unique buildings are welcomed and encouraged!
Can't make it live? Don't worry, you'll have access to the full replay for one week after the entire series concludes!
