To best appreciate this webinar, we encourage you to first watch at least one episode of the Batman TV Series on Amazon Prime!
Holy anniversary, Batman! When the Batman television series burst onto screens on January 12, 1966, it didn’t just entertain — it sparked a full-blown cultural explosion of capes, catchphrases, and color-saturated camp. But how did a comic book crimefighter from the 1940s become a prime-time sensation that turned “Batmania” into a national obsession? Get ready to examine the origins, oddities, and over-the-top flair of a TV phenomenon that made television history — and changed the superhero genre forever.
Join New York Adventure Club for a retrospective and illustrated analysis of the groundbreaking Batman television series (1966–1968), which brought the Dark Knight out of the shadows and into the center of America’s living rooms with a bang — and plenty of wall-to-wall “Biff!” and “Zap!”
Led by pop culture historian Arlen Schumer, our in-depth exploration into Gotham's brightest moment on television will include:
- An examination of the pop culture environment of the mid-1960s that birthed the Batman TV series — including the rise of psychedelia and comic book fandom
- A look into the comic book roots of Batman and how they were adapted (and transformed) for a primetime television audience
- A survey of behind-the-scenes decisions that led to the show's signature camp style, including casting choices and visual direction
- The surprising role of Hugh Hefner in the show’s greenlighting — and what Playboy parties had to do with the Caped Crusader's return
- Insights into the "Batmania" craze — the merchandising boom, media saturation, and cultural legacy that followed in the wake of the show’s debut
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Arlen — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
