It's a surprising fact that at the dawn of the 20th century, Jewish-American immigrants — and their children — not only dominated modern show business, but also virtually created the first forms of mass media. Who were some of these megastar pioneers in the evolving landscape of American entertainment such as vaudeville and radio? It's time to dive into the careers of three larger-than life figures who epitomized the era's spirit of self-parody and humor with tuneful melodies.
Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the lives, careers, and musical legacies of three legendary singer-actor-comedians who shaped the landscape of American show business during its formative years in the early 20th century:
- Al Jolson (Asa Yoelson - 1886-1950)
- Sophie Tucker (Sofia Kalish - 1886-1966)
- Eddie Cantor (Isidore Itzkowitz - 1892-1964)
Led by award-winning author Will Friedwald, who is widely considered one of the nation's most prolific music writers, our virtual musical journey will include:
- The common thread uniting these iconic figures and what made them the trailblazing entertainers of their time
- Their triumph in the burgeoning entertainment mediums of vaudeville and Broadway-style musical theater, which paved the way for their roles in pioneering electronic mass reproduction technologies like sound recordings, talking motion pictures, and radio
- A deep dive into their individual strengths as they navigated different platforms, such as Jolson's synonymous association with sound film, Cantor's radio and television stardom, and Tucker's groundbreaking performances in nightclubs and later on TV
- A discussion of their other many accomplishments outside of show business, including Jolson's wartime heroism, Tucker's proto-feminist legacy, and Cantor's bold advocacy for Jewish causes and defiance against McCarthyism during the Red Scare
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Will — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
