In 1925, New York City extended Sixth Avenue to both connect downtown traffic to the new Holland Tunnel and make way for a much-needed subway line beneath it. But slicing a modern corridor through some of Manhattan’s oldest and most tangled neighborhoods came at a steep cost. It's time to uncover the powerful forces — and painful consequences — behind one of the most ambitious urban redesigns in city history.
Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the dramatic story of the Sixth Avenue extension project of 1925. While the project improved downtown traffic flow and created space for a new subway line, it also cut through the heart of neighborhoods like the West Village, SoHo, and Hudson Square — demolishing over 140 buildings and displacing 10,000+ people along the way.
Led by architect, educator, and licensed NYC guide Erik Hodgetts, our unique experience will include:
- The distinctive characteristics of Sixth Avenue — both planned and unintended — that emerged from its 1925 extension
- How the character of these neighborhoods developed and changed, from their Colonial-era origins to the dense, working-class blocks of the early 20th century
- A closer look at the communities impacted, especially the vibrant Italian-American residents and institutions that were uprooted by the project
- The technologies and construction methods used to carve a new avenue and subway line through a centuries-old neighborhood
- Where to find the lasting scars today, in the form of realigned blocks, unusual building angles, leftover parks, and ghost streets that reveal the project's complex legacy
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Erik — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
