In a recent poll, 51% of Americans self-identified as “ice obsessed,” consuming up to 400 pounds of ice each per year. But why? From stories of an eccentric businessman who landed on the idea to carve chunks of ice from the lake on his family estate — to a little-known doctor in Florida who invented the first ice machine — it's time to reveal how producing and selling frozen water in America gave rise to new industries, celebrity and political careers, and even a decades-long "ice war."
Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the strange and storied history of ice in America, and answer the question as to why Americans put ice in their drinks when so many around the world do not.
Led by historian and journalist Amy Brady – the author of Ice: From Mixed Drinks to Skating Rinks—a Cool History of a Hot Commodity – our unique virtual experience of this fascinating tale will include:
- A description of the intrepid ice harvesters who risked their lives on frozen lakes to bring ice to Americans everywhere
- A discussion of how ice cocktails played a major role in getting nineteenth-century Americans hooked on ice
- How the first ice machine shocked America, leading to cries of blasphemy and despair that mere men were trying to make ice
- Rare photos of the tools used to harvest ice by hand
- An overview of how ice led to the transformation of refrigeration and medical technology
- What the future may hold for ice on a swiftly warming planet
Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Amy — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
