While Sharjah might not be the most well-known emirate within the United Arab Emirates (UAE), it's arguably the country's capital of cultural heritage. How did this desert city transform into an artistic oasis, and what structures and events have put it on the international arts map? It's time to uncover this hidden gem like never before.
Join New York Adventure Club as we delve into the extraordinary transformation of Sharjah, UAE, a global hub of heritage and art featuring everything from stunning traditional mosques and souks to avant-garde architecture by some of the world's top architects.
Led by Sylvia Laudien-Meo — art historian, museum educator, and NYC tour guide — this virtual journey through Sharjah will include:
- A brief look at the history and archaeological importance of Sharjah dating back 5,000 years
- A showcase of Sharjah’s stunning traditional buildings, including Al Noor Mosque and the city’s vibrant souqs
- The unique architecture of Al Noor Island, home to the stunning Butterfly Pavilion designed by 3deluxe
- The Sharjah Art Foundation’s exhibition spaces and the awe-inspiring Rain Room installation
- A glimpse into iconic modern buildings like Norman Foster’s House of Wisdom, Zaha Hadid’s BEEAH Headquarters, and Aljada — a cutting-edge development featuring works by renowned architects Tadao Ando and Zaha Hadid
- The archaeological treasures within Al Madam's buried "ghost" village, a development south of the modern town that was abandoned decades ago due to desertification and dune movement
- An overview of the Sharjah Safari Park, the largest of its kind outside of Africa
- A deep dive into the Xposure Photo Festival, featuring celebrated photographers such as Pete Souza, Jean Pierre Laffont, and Stefan Falke
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Sylvia — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
