In the rent party glow of Harlem’s golden age, a generation of queer Black creatives sparked a cultural revolution hidden in plain sight. Who were the artists, musicians, and writers who redefined art and identity — and how did their chosen families and radical ideas shape the Harlem Renaissance? It's time for an intimate look at the bold, beautiful, and often overlooked stories of Black LGBTQ+ life in early 20th-century Harlem.
Join New York Adventure Club and The New York Historical as we delve into The Gay Harlem Renaissance, a groundbreaking exhibition at the museum that explores the queer lives and legacies behind one of the most influential cultural movements in American history.
Led by The New York Historical Docent Kyle Einhorn, our virtual experience will include:
- An introduction to Harlem’s transformation after World War I into a thriving cultural hub shaped by Black Southern and Caribbean migrants, artists, and activists
- A closer look at Countee Cullen’s poetry debut, Color, and his mentorship with Alain Locke, which guided both his literary career and personal journey
- An exploration of rent parties and speakeasies, where LGBTQ+ Harlemites built community and joyfully defied convention
- A spotlight on transmasculine performer Gladys Bentley, whose white tuxedo, powerful voice, and piano stylings electrified Harlem nightlife
- A study of Richmond Barthé’s sculptures, capturing intimate moments from queer and interracial social circles in Harlem and Paris
- A glimpse into the visual storytelling of Jacob Lawrence, whose Harlem Diner evokes the era’s daily struggles and resilience amid the Great Depression
Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Kyle — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
