This is a re-aired recording of this program’s most recent live webinar. Once the viewing period ends, this recording will not be offered again for at least one year.
In an art world that historically treated men as the only true artistic geniuses, women struggled to find a place. But by the mid-1800s in the United States, some women artists were willing to buck cultural norms of art-making only as a hobby and find recognition as professionals. Who were the American women artists that were able to break the art world's glass ceiling in the 19th and 20th centuries? And who fell into obscurity with their deaths, after success in their lifetimes? It's time to re-engage with these women who painted a portrait of the joys and challenges of becoming working artists, as well as the radically changing world of modern America.
Join New York Adventure Club for a three-part series that explores the art and lives of American women artists working before World War II. In Part Two, we focus on Georgia O'Keeffe, the long-lived master of invention and reinvention. As a teacher and provocateur in the avant-garde, O'Keeffe created a lyrical voice of place, space, and time. Even as she lived life on her own terms, O'Keeffe also carefully cultivated her image, ensuring her legacy.
Led by American Art Historian Rena Tobey, our artistic deep dive will include:
- An understanding of what makes O'Keeffe's works so distinctive and radical
- A consideration of her lively life story and the aesthetic interweaving of her life and work
- Analysis of some of her less-known works, including those from her New York City period
- A meditation on the emotional and spiritual experience of O'Keeffe's vision
See you there, virtually!

"The Presenters presentation, comparing the artists and introducing influences in their works. Also that she took notes from the chat and read and answered their questions so people felt involved! Rena is excellent at what she does, I have learned a great deal about Mary Cassatt and Georgia O'Keefe in the two brief seminars!! Her overview and selection of pieces to discuss is well planned and come full circle so she really cements the knowledge she presents!! After watching these two sessions I can relate to my own artistic expressions better as well knowing about other's influences, perceptions, journeys and how they became the artists they were. Thank you!! Truly a great program and I would love to take other Artist series programs offered by Rena as well!!" -EB
