No other American architect changed the way we think about the built environment in modern times more than Frank Lloyd Wright. With a career spanning seven decades, his oeuvre grew to include places of worship and entertainment, factory buildings, hotels, and museums — eight buildings of which are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. From first making a name for himself with his prairie-style homes replete with built-in matching decorative detail, to his iconic Falling Waters home nestled on top of a waterfall, it's time to uncover the development of his style and use of materials and techniques like never before.
Join New York Adventure Club for an in-depth exploration of Frank Lloyd Wright’s pioneering architecture, which reimagines how the spaces within our built environment are best designed to fit modern life.
Led by Sylvia Laudien-Meo — art historian, museum educator, and NYC tour guide — this virtual journey through Wright's incredible career will include:
- A brief overview of Wright's early years and how he got into architecture
- How Wright's concept of 'Organic Architecture' blurred the lines between built structures and the natural world, as well as introduced built-in furniture, windows and decorative objects
- A discussion of how Wright's prairie homes redefined American suburban living through innovative design and affordability
- Wright's daring experiments with concrete, challenging traditional architectural norms
- A look at many of his outstanding designs such as prairie style residential projects, the former Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, and Guggenheim Museum in NYC — his final and arguably most famous masterpiece
- The unique role of Taliesin East and West as both homes and architectural laboratories for Frank Lloyd Wright
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Sylvia — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
