For one critical week in October 1776, a sleepy New York village became the epicenter of the American Revolution’s survival. How did General Washington’s weary forces manage to outmaneuver a far superior British-Hessian army poised to deliver a crushing blow? It's time to uncover the dramatic story of bold decisions, daring escapes, and unexpected triumphs that helped preserve the fight for American independence.

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the pivotal Battle of White Plains, a little-known yet consequential Revolutionary War clash that tested the mettle of General George Washington’s army and shaped the course of American history.

Led by Stephen Paul DeVillo, historian and author of the upcoming book Neutral Ground: Westchester in the Revolution 1777-1783, our unique virtual experience will include:

  • An overview of the Battle of White Plains, including its strategic context after the fall of New York City and its role in Washington's defensive campaign
  • A look at the British and Hessian offensive, and how the numerically superior enemy forces sought to encircle and crush the Continental Army
  • An exploration of George Washington’s tactical decisions, including his use of local terrain and last-minute maneuvers to escape total defeat
  • Profiles of key players, such as Alexander Hamilton, Lord Howe, and the fearless Delaware Regiment, who helped turn the tide
  • A discussion around the legacy of the battle, and how this near-catastrophic moment ultimately strengthened the American cause
  • Plaques and remnants still visible today, offering a tangible connection to the battlefield nearly 250 years later

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Stephen — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
