This is a re-aired recording of this program’s most recent live webinar. Once the viewing period ends, this recording will not be offered again for at least one year.

For over a century, London had the largest port in the world, able to accommodate hundreds of passenger ships — and hundreds of thousands of cargo shipments — across a nine-mile stretch of interconnected docks and railway network. And while the area became a desolate, decrepit, and disused part of London by the 1970s, how was it able to transform from this maritime graveyard into one of the most important financial centers in the world? It's time to uncover the fascinating story of London's Docklands and one of the most incredible regeneration projects ever attempted in Europe.

Join New York Adventure Club for a virtual exploration of London’s Docklands, an area of London that once boasted the world's largest port in the 19th and 20th centuries before transforming into a 21st century global financial hub.

Led by award winning London Blue Badge Tour Guide Pepe Martinez, our virtual experience using powerful images, video, and Google street view will include:

  • The risk of shipping goods to and from London before the docks were built in the 19th century
  • How London's average-sized port kept on growing until it was the largest dock in the world — a designation it held for over a century
  • The somber story of its complete destruction during WWII and eventual disastrous closure
  • The incredible revitalization of the area as London’s 2nd financial hub, sometimes described as "Manhattan on the Water"

See you there, virtually!

"Everything! I LOVE Pepe... I don't care what he's talking about - I'll listen and follow closely! I know it's important to "be there" (like in person) but the remote presentations are so well done and hang together so well, with the combo of video, maps, slides, etc. that I kind of feel "in person" would miss some of the continuity." -Elise
"I love the video on his bike. It really takes you there. His knowledge of architecture and history is superb. He explains complex things in a very understandable way, so helpful. As always Pepe’s accent is so charming. I’ve seen his east and tours the old East End in the new we stand and he is a great presenter." -Sharon
