Spite walls, sleazy spouses, and a ‘slum with a view’ — Upper Riverside Drive isn’t as quiet as it seems. Between curving monuments and postcard-perfect views, this stretch of Manhattan has witnessed some of the city's most unexpected stories despite the neighborhood’s elegant veneer. Get ready to explore the litte-known tales that have shaped this historic neighborhood.

Join New York Adventure Club as we hit the streets to uncover the architectural surprises and scandalous stories of Upper Riverside Drive between 108th and 124 Streets.

Led by Stephanie Azzarone — a former journalist, and author of the award-winning book, Heaven on the Hudson: Mansions, Monuments, and Marvels of Riverside Park — this in-depth experience will include:

  • A visit to the site where a wealthy resident erected a "spite wall" to obstruct a neighbor's view
  • The former single-room occupancy building, once dubbed a "slum with a view," now transformed into a cooperative residence
  • The scene of a notorious, headline-making murder that shocked the neighborhood
  • A stop in front of The Mira Mar, featuring its mysterious architectural "signature"
  • The Woman's Health Protective Association Monument, honoring women who championed public health improvements
  • Iconic landmarks such as Grant’s Tomb, Riverside Church, and the poignant Amiable Child Monument

See you there!

*Please bring a water bottle and comfortable pair of shoes as we’ll be doing a lot of walking!
**This tour will conclude at 124th Street and Riverside Park
***This tour does not go inside any of the mansions
