Woodstock, NY, has long been a symbol of creativity, rebellion, and cultural transformation. But its countercultural roots stretch back far beyond the Summer of Love, shaped by a rich artistic legacy that has influenced generations. How did this small Hudson Valley town become a creative mecca for generations of artists and musicians? It’s time to uncover the lesser-known stories behind its rise, from 19th-century utopian artist colonies to the legendary 1969 music festival.
Join New York Adventure Club for a two-part series tracing the evolution of Woodstock as a hub for American counterculture. In Part Two: Music, we'll explore the town’s deep musical heritage and the legendary figures who shaped its sound, from folk and jazz to rock and beyond.
Led by historian and filmmaker Stephen Blauweiss, this visually immersive journey featuring hundreds of rare historic photographs and images will include:
- A look at Woodstock’s early music scene and how Maverick Concert Hall’s chamber music festival and bohemian coffeehouses set the stage for a thriving music culture
- The folk music revival of the 1940s–1960s, from Pete Seeger and Joan Baez to Odetta and Phil Ochs, and their impact on Woodstock’s evolving sound
- Albert Grossman’s music empire, which brought Bob Dylan, The Band, Richie Havens, and other icons to Woodstock and transformed the era’s music scene
- A deep dive into Woodstock’s live music venues in the ‘60s and ‘70s, featuring performances by Janis Joplin, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, Bonnie Raitt, and more
- Behind-the-scenes stories from the 1969 Woodstock Music & Art Fair, including Jimi Hendrix’s Upstate New York retreat and the festival that defined a generation
- Woodstock’s jazz legacy — exploring how The Creative Music Studio became a hub for jazz greats like Charles Mingus, Ornette Coleman, and Gil Evans
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Stephen — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
