"Oklahoma! is about a picnic, Carousel is about life and death." - Stephen Sondheim
In 1945, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein astounded the world with the premiere of their masterpiece, Carousel, one of their most beloved creations of all time (and also one of their deepest and darkest). How did this timeless show loaded with memorable characters and unforgettable songs come to define American musical theatre? It's time to explore how the tale of an innocent mill-worker and a cynical carnival barker were used to illuminate profoundly complex issues of good and evil, Heaven and earth, man and God, and, as Sondehim once said, “life and death.”
Join New York Adventure Club for a deep dive into the backstory of Carousel. Beginning its life as Liliom — a 1909 play by the great Hungarian dramatist Ferenc Molnár — this tale of an innocent mill-worker and a cynical carnival barker would evolve into a successful English language production on Broadway in 1921, and later two movie versions in 1930 (USA) and 1934 (France).
Led by award-winning author Will Friedwald, who is widely considered one of the nation's most prolific music writers, our virtual analysis of this masterpiece, its creators, and its lasting impact on world culture, will include:
- Behind-the-scenes anecdotes about the production's challenges and triumphs
- An exploration of the iconic songs and score that have captured audiences' hearts for nearly 80 years, such as “If I Loved You,” the remarkable “Soliloquy,” the jubilant dance number “June is Bustin’ Out All Over,” and the greatest spiritual ever written for a Broadway show, “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
- An examination of the enduring legacy of this classic work and its impact on the world of musical theater
- Insights into the cultural and historical context of Carousel’s time and place
- The unique history of its celebrated 1956 movie adaptation — and how that has become the most famous movie Frank Sinatra never made
- A look at the many subsequent revivals, including the 1967 television production
- Great jazz and pop interpretations of songs from the score
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Will — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
