For more than two centuries, the monumental architecture of ancient Egypt has appeared in surprising places around the world — including the streets and skyline of New York City. How did the symbols of an ancient Nile civilization travel across the Atlantic to become powerful expressions of permanence, authority, and ambition in American culture? From towering obelisks and solemn memorials to long-lost landmarks that once stood where familiar institutions now rise, it's time to trace the enduring waves of “Egyptomania” that shaped the architectural landscape of New York and beyond.
Join New York Adventure Club for a two-part series exploring the global Egyptian Revival movement — and how its monumental forms found a particularly rich expression across New York City and New York State. In Part One: 1787–1865, we'll trace the earliest surge of “Egyptomania,” from the imaginative Egyptian motifs of the late 18th century to the monumental structures that emerged in the decades leading up to the Civil War.
Led by licensed NYC tour guide James Henry, this virtual exploration will include:
- The origins of Egyptian Revival — How early European fascination with Egypt, later amplified by Napoleon’s 1798 invasion and the publication of Description de l’Égypte, sparked the first global wave of “Egyptomania”
- Key features of ancient Egyptian architecture — Massive stone construction, inward-sloping “battered” walls, and symbolic columns modeled after sacred plants of the Nile
- Obelisks beyond the Nile — How this ancient Egyptian symbol spread across Europe and America as monuments of remembrance, power, and civic identity
- Egyptian Revival architecture around the world — Notable buildings and monuments that adapted Egypt’s “eternal” aesthetic for the modern age
- New York State’s Egyptian-inspired landmarks — Including the imposing Halls of Justice known as “The Tombs” and the massive Croton Distributing Reservoir that once stood where the New York Public Library now rises
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with James — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
