This is a re-aired recording of this program’s most recent live webinar. Once the viewing period ends, this recording will not be offered again for at least one year.

While the traditions surrounding Easter are largely the same around the world, the Eastern Orthodox Church has a unique custom of having church icons carried out of the church with parishioners joining the procession. No painting captures this scene and tradition better than Ukrainian artist Ilya Repin's masterpiece Religious Procession in Kursk Governorate (1883). What makes this painting a backbone of art history, and how does it capture an important moment in Ukrainian and Russian history? It's time to uncover how a single art piece shares the story of a region and importance of a cultural phenomenon.

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the life and legacy of Ukrainian artist Ilya Repin (1844-1930) and how his art highlighted everything from 19th century European artistic and political influences, historical events and movements in Ukraine and Russia, and the complexities and mysteries of the beloved artist.

Led by Dutch art historian, museum guide, and New York Adventure Club lecturer Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff, this in-depth study of Ilya Repin and his masterful art will include:

  • An overview of the traditions during Easter in the Orthodox Church
  • How this religious event and celebration of Russian culture and tradition is in fact a complex reading of contemporary Russian society
  • The life and work of Ilya Repin, the leading artist in the Russian Realist movement in the late 19th century, including the social commentary of his paintings
  • Historical, religious, and socio-economic background of 19th century Ukraine and the Russian territories
  • Repin's power in turning the everyday into the epic, something that would become an inspiration for Socialist Realism during the Soviet Era

Testimonials
"Absolutely everything -- it was splendid! As in her previous presentations, Mariska took what appeared to be a rather limited topic and expanded it magnificently, giving a mini-course on 19th century Russian art, not just a discourse on a single painting. Mariska's enthusiasm is contagious! I have been reading quite a bit of Dostoevsky lately and this material illustrated the intellectual currents of 19th century Russian thinking and writing as well as painting. I have enjoyed the three presentations by Mariska that I have seen immensely and will absolutely sign up for anything else she offers." -Lahring
"Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff is an excellent speaker. Please schedule her to do as many presentations as she is willing and able to do." -Christine
"Opened up a whole new world for me of Ukrainian and Russian art along with the importance of the icons." -Kathy
"I really enjoyed learning about Ilya Repin’s depiction of normal people in Ukraine. The historical background really helped me to understand his paintings more. Thanks for a really fun, informative webinar!" -Julie
"I learned lots about an unknown (for me) Ukrainian/Russian artist plus some history during the 19th century." -Nancy
"Mariska really brought to life this painter, and painting, that I had never heard of before." -Becky
"I loved this class, I never knew this artist and it was amazing to learn about him and dive into his painting. Mariska is an incredible presenter I take every one of her webinars I learn so much about art that I never considered before and she makes it really interesting with so many slides." -Susan
